I have read that there are some issues trying to use the 4L60E that came with the S10's. Seems that the LS based 4L60E is longer than the SBC version. U.S. Coast Guard... So to conclude, I'd recommend 3.73 if you are leaning toward the performance aspect of an LS swap, and 3.42 if you are wanting a DD that is lots of fun to drive, and you like to drive on the hwy.

Easiest would be a 88-95 350 TBI from a full sized truck, van or Burb. You can keep the trans, wiring, and fuel pump that you have. A later 96-98 Vortec 350 would be more powerful and more work and expense. Later trans and some wiring.I definitely would not recommend the uncoated headers, so tack on $200-$300 more. I kept the original rear end and a lot of original S10 stuff to save on money, but it just adds up.
